Cape Classic 380: An Epic Ride Through the Western Cape

The Cape Classic 380, a premier three-day cycling event, was once again a highlight for cycling enthusiasts, showcasing the spirit of endurance, community, and fun. What is normally limited to an elite group of 60 cyclists, this year’s participation was up to 80 plus, due to demand.

This year’s event took place from Friday, 25 October, through Sunday, 27 October 2024, in the stunning landscapes of Montagu, Western Cape and celebrated it’s 10th year in existence.

The Thrill of Protected Peloton Riding

One of the unique features of the Cape Classic is its commitment to rider safety, providing participants with a fully protected peloton experience. This means that for the entire 380km, riders had the reassurance of ThinkBike moto outriders—professionally trained motorcyclists who ensured safety from traffic and allowed cyclists to stay focused on the ride itself.

The Perfect Combo of Challenge and Support

The Cape Classic isn’t just about distance; it’s also about achieving new heights, both literally and figuratively. Riders faced the challenge of mountainous climbs, highlighted by King of the Mountains and Points Jersey competitions. Adding a layer of fun, the event also featured a sponsored time trial stage with prizes for top performers. With full medical and mechanical support, riders could focus on the road ahead without worrying about unforeseen hiccups. Plus, Ride Captains were there to help set a steady pace, providing encouragement and teamwork along the way.

A Snapshot of Each Day’s Ride

Day 1: A 100km Opener with 1500m Elevation

The adventure began with a 100km ride and a 1500m climb that set the tone for the weekend. Crisp spring weather and breathtaking views welcomed the riders as they rolled in and out of Montagu.

Day 2: 160km and 1870m Elevation – The Toughest Day

Saturday brought the longest and most challenging segment, covering 160km and climbing 1870m over the iconic Tradouw and Op de Tradouw passes. The scenery was as dramatic as the climbs, as riders pushed through ascents and raced towards the next rest point, soaking in the camaraderie of the peloton.

Day 3: A Shortened Finish Due to Weather

Though typically a 106km route with 770m of climbing, Day 3 was shortened to 42km due to predicted high winds and rain. It was a bittersweet conclusion but didn’t dampen the enthusiasm or camaraderie among participants. The shorter ride allowed for a high-energy finale that left everyone smiling.

A Memorable Cape Classic

From the springtime vistas to the expertly organized peloton experience, the Cape Classic 380 proved once again why it’s a standout event in the South African cycling calendar.

For those who missed it, this event promises not just miles but memories—and we at Darkmint can’t wait to see more of you at the next one!
