For many road cyclists, the Old Mutual Double Century is a calendar highlight.
Starting and finishing in the small town of Swellendam, cyclists take on a 200km circular route that could take teams between 4 and 8 hours.
A team is made up of 10 riders which can either be all male, all female or mixed.
Don’t make the mistake of thinking this is easy. Weather conditions play an essential role of dictating how hard you’ll work. And that’s above the serious climbs that are faced throughout the race.
This year, teams starting early, rolled up to the start line in a downpour which hadn’t eased after a night of nail-biting stormy weather.
After delaying starts, the event organisers were forced to make a call to cancel the event with rider safety in mind.
It is never easy, but safety is always the main concern when making such a big decision.
With road events on the decline, let’s look to support the organisers and sponsors who are still prepared to keep things going.
If you have any intention to enter for next year, get to planning your training and watch for when entries open.
